 Generating Ideas

Generating Ideas

I generate ideas by freely thinking about the subject and I write everything that comes up, even if it is a ridiculous idea. The idea itself may be ridiculous or not fit to the purpose at first, but something from it may turn out to be a useful idea. I don't have necessarily a course of action I always follow because I believe that changing some procedures helps having more good ideas.

One of the resources I use is the internet. I type one word, let "Google" do the work. Then I jump from page to page, even if it doesn't make sense. I look around in every page in order to "fish" for new ideas and I keep moving this way. I call this technique "brainstroming with the internet".

My friends seems to rely more on dictionaries and "formal" sources like books and scientific magazines. They are more academic oriented than me. But, for a "brainstroming with "others", browsing withou purpose on the internet does wonders for me. The elders I know have fixed ideas and they usually reject "new" ideas. I am quite different in this manner.

Writer's Journal #7 - Generating Ideas

PART I:
Reflect and Respond to the questions about generating ideas.

Click the button below to join the discussion about generating ideas. In the discussion forum, please address the following questions:

    • How do you generate, or come up with, ideas? Do you follow certain patterns of thinking or action when you are trying to generate ideas for something? Do you make lists or map out your ideas visually? Are there particular resources (the library, the World Wide Web, teachers) you browse to generate ideas? Why do you use particular resources and not others?
    • How do your peers (in your culture and/or community) seem to generate ideas? How similar or different do these processes seem to be from your own?
    • How do your elders (parents, older relatives, mentors) seem to generate ideas? Do they use the same resources as you do?
Please give these questions some thought; share your reflections with your classmates, read what they have to say, and then respond to the posts of 1 or 2 of your peers. A typical post is 1 or 2 short paragraphs maximum.

PART II: Writer's Journal #7 - Generating Ideas

DIRECTIONS
After you make your initial discussion post, be sure to read at least 2-3 of your peers’ posts. Then, consider (i) what we have learned this week so far, (ii) your answers to the questions in the discussion thread, and (iii) your peers’ responses to the questions above. With this in mind, please answer the following question:

    • What does the discussion forum on generating ideas reveal to you about the ways in which you generate ideas? What do your peers’ contributions to the discussion forum reveal about alternative ways of generating ideas?
Be sure to be as detailed and thorough as possible, and use examples to help explain your response. Be sure to read over your response to be sure it says what you want it to say.
